Back in mid-July 2026, I stumbled across an ad online for a beer hall at Kyu-Sakuranomiya Kokaido, in Osaka. What caught my eye was the historic look of the building itself. And also, the fact that you almost never get to eat a meal inside somewhere this old — I mean, when do you ever get to do that?! It looked so cool, so I booked it for me and three friends right away.
Fair warning though: maybe it’s because it’s popular, I’m not sure — but there weren’t a lot of open slots for the beer hall when I booked. The beer garden still had plenty of availability. It’s a summer-only thing, so if you want to go, I’d reach out to them directly to check.
A Little Context: Beer Gardens in Japan
In Japan, beer gardens and beer halls are a whole summer thing. Every year people get excited about which one they’re going to go drink and have a fun night out at (well, if you drink — if you don’t, this obviously isn’t for you). Most people picture a beer garden as “that thing on top of a department store.” But this one — the Kyu-Sakuranomiya Kokaido beer hall/beer garden — is different. You get to drink surrounded by history, which felt pretty out-of-the-ordinary even to me. Even for Japanese people, eating and drinking inside a historic building like this isn’t something you get to do very often.
About Kyu-Sakuranomiya Kokaido
The front facade dates back to 1871 and was moved to this site in 1935 as the front entrance of the Meiji Emperor Memorial Hall. The hall was used for ceremonies and other events, and in 1948 it became Sakuranomiya Public Hall. Although the public hall later closed, the building was renovated and is now used as a wedding venue and restaurant. The front entrance is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, so it has been preserved in its original form. The Japanese garden has also been restored, and I loved the balance between the garden and the Western-style building.
Getting There
I walked from JR Sakuranomiya Station, along the river. Took me maybe 15 minutes? The breeze off the river felt nice, and the path runs through a park, so it still feels like nature, even in the middle of the city.
Before We Went In
When we got there, people were already hanging out in the beer garden. The tables set up in the pretty garden in front of the building had a breeze coming off the water that seemed to take the edge off the heat. Between the grand building and the summer evening light, the whole scene felt really romantic.
Part of me thought “the beer garden looks nice too,” but mostly I just ended up taking a ton of photos of the garden and the building’s facade. You don’t get a setting like this every day! I had so much fun just wandering around out there.
Finally, Inside the Beer Hall
I’d seen photos of the inside before booking, so I knew there’d be a big hall and high ceilings.
But once we actually walked in — there was this huge chandelier, and the whole room had this old-school elegance to it. I couldn’t stop staring.
My friend who came with me was just as excited. She kept saying “thank you so much for booking this!!” and “this is so lovely~~” over and over. She’d actually dressed up for the occasion, not her usual beer-garden outfit — and of course, so did I! I think slacks are probably better than a t-shirt and jeans for a place like this. Though it’s summer, so honestly, whatever’s comfortable works too.
Food and Drinks
The food was casual, crowd-pleasing stuff — grilled meats, fried chicken, a build-your-own tortilla bar, pasta, sausages. Nothing fancy, but really tasty, and before I knew it, I’d eaten way too much!
Drinks weren’t just beer either — there was wine and sparkling wine, and both were good. There was also a little station with cocktail syrups where you could mix your own drinks, but I skipped that one — cocktails have never really been my thing.
It’s not fine dining, and it’s not a formal event, but that weighty atmosphere of the building made for a nice contrast.
Not Your Typical Osaka Sightseeing Spot
Kyu-Sakuranomiya Kokaido isn’t one of the standard Osaka tourist spots. But if you want a different kind of experience than what most visitors to Japan end up having, this is worth considering.
If a night like this — something a little off the usual tourist path — sounds like your thing, there’s apparently also a customizable private walking tour of Osaka.
Instead of following a fixed list of stops, tours like “Best Private Osaka Walking Tour With A Guide 100% Personalised” are apparently planned around what you’re interested in, after talking with your guide beforehand — at least, that’s what the site says.

I can’t say for sure whether a guide would take you somewhere like Kyu-Sakuranomiya Kokaido — I think that really comes down to how you describe what you’re looking for.
